So, I keep reminding myself that we are only halfway into the second cycle of the school year, because I keep worrying we're never going to start this reading journey together... We have been busy prepping for reading the Odyssey by researching related topics and building a class resource (slideshow). This will prove useful when reading as we can access information about important names, events, places, etc from Greek Culture, Mythology, and History.
However, we've competed with things beyond our control like the Advisory schedule (oops, I forgot!) and the Modern Language Association's (MLA's) nit picky rules for citation, but we persevered and are finally about to read from... drum roll, please... Homer's The Odyssey! One final note, the students' work with the slideshow was great - I was impressed by the effort and engagement. Below are two slides created by students that will serve as useful references for Book 1. Enjoy!

As we near the end of our first cycle (day 7 = Monday, 9/11), I have enjoyed getting to know the freshman in my A block class. The energy in the room is contagious and, if I'm being completely honest, maybe a little exhausting. ;)
Below is a picture of the "takeaways" the students left me with after our opening activity... I promise to remember to keep their concerns in mind with planning and curriculum this year, and I told them they have the right to let me know when I'm not being mindful of these ideas. I'm looking forward to a great year with this group! |
