I'm so excited to kick off the Independent Reading project with you this week. I hear some of your reading "woes"... "School killed reading for me", "It always feels forced", "I never have time to read", "It's not just the reading but the work we have to do with it that makes it feel like such a chore..."
The complaints are endless and valid. So, as we discussed, starting this week, you own the reading on Fridays - what do you want to read? How can you accomplish your personal reading goals? For starters, with my help... setting aside time for goal setting, reading, and goal tracking. Not to mention, taking some of the "work" associated with reading away... let's chat about your book when you finish, ok? No BIG project or paper... just a conversation. You'll find me with a copy of one of the books below on Friday... I've started both (very different), and since school started, I have not set aside enough time for the pleasure of reading either. I'm hoping this gives new meaning to TGIF! Remember our motto... Free to Read Fridays (don't worry, there will be emblazoned book marks with the slogan to help you remember)! Happy Reading...

As we begin the year, I am excited by the enthusiasm of the English 11 students as demonstrated through the found poem activity. If they approach each unit with the same willingness to find something in the literature we read and discuss together, we'll have a great year ahead.
Students, your voice matters in this class, so we want to hear what you are finding in the literature - what do you notice about the big ideas or themes we are discussing? What do you notice about the relevance of the same big idea in our world today? Let's think, talk, and find something together... |
